Winners Robert Frazier and Nathan Dort designed a Web-based application to help with opiate addiction. For that, they participated today in a special event with the secretary to discuss the impact the opioid epidemic has had on young people in America.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is currently addressing the pressing and personal challenge of the opioid epidemic. As part of its response efforts, it is traveling to nearly two dozen states to learn how communities are responding to this issue.

NIFH STEM High School Principal Dina Popa received the invitation by letter, which read:

We truly hope Akron Public Schools will see the benefit in sending Nathan Dort and Robert Frazier to a conversation with senior HHS officials and other Ohioans for a discussion on how the opioid epidemic has impacted our youth. We were particularly moved by the innovative work of Nathan and Robert and believe they would add a unique perspective to the conversation that we have not yet gleaned from any of our previous travels. Their mobile application has made shockwaves through DC -- and around the nation -- and we would really appreciate the opportunity to hear from them, personally.

Our most heartfelt congratulations to Nathan and Robert, Principal Popa, their teacher Sam Appleby and everyone at STEM HS who continues to innovate and educate.
