Black Women's Leadership Scholarships

The Ohio Black Women’s Leadership Caucus Inc. Akron Chapter presented its 37th annual Salute to Women and Scholarship Luncheon April 28 at The Tangier. Dr. Sadie Winlock, president and CEO of the Akron Urban League, was guest speaker for this year’s event, which was themed, “Women Making an Impact in the Community.”

During the luncheon, 25 women were honored; and six $1,000 nonrenewable scholarships were presented to these Akron public high school students, shown below, from left, with members of the caucus:
  • Allan Thomas II, of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Science Technology, Engineering and Math High School, with a 4.18 GPA, going to The Ohio State University (OSU);
  • Symphony Sanders, Firestone Community Learning Center, 3.9 GPA, The University of Akron (UA) or University of Kentucky;
  • Scholarship Co-chair Leslie Farr;
  • Kofie Boakye, Akron Early College High School, 4.17 GPA, Berklee College of Music;
  • Co-chair Barbara Leathers;
  • Vanessa Oliver, Akron Early College, 4.1 GPA, UA or Kent State University; and
  • Mariah Muhammad, Buchtel Community Learning Center, 3.9 GPA, OSU.
