Earlier this year, The Summit WAPS-FM announced the Rock+Recovery Scholarship Program, a new opportunity for seniors attending Akron Public Schools (APS) that focuses on raising awareness for substance abuse and recovery challenges faced by area teenagers. Station officials said scholarship applicants were asked to consider the experiences of someone they know or love, someone who has been impacted by substance abuse, addiction or mental health challenge, or their own personal experiences. The application process invited students to share their recovery stories in the form of essays, poetry, original songs or one-dimensional works of art on paper.

An awards reception for the scholarship recipients was held June 14 at the APS Ott Staff Development Center, home of The Summit FM. Officials said Culver worked with Bruno to develop the scholarship program.

“The scholarships reward our students for creativity and resiliency, criteria that often go unnoticed in purely academic scholarship submission,” said Culver. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to use difficulties as a springboard to move forward, and we look forward to the event again next year.”

As part of the reception, each student recorded spots for the Rock+Recovery program, and The Summit will share voices of recovery and hope from the next generation across multiple delivery platforms.

Rock and Recovery was introduced by The Summit as a new streaming community service channel in 2011, dedicated to sharing stories, voices of recovery, resources and upbeat, positive music to help heal and reduce stigma for individuals and their families who are struggling with addiction and/or mental health challenges and trauma. The program airs nightly from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is accessible at www.rockandrecovery.com and through The Summit’s mobile app.
