This week, Akron Public Schools snagged more awards for its STEM education than any other school district in the state.

On Tuesday, the Ohio Academy of Science, a Columbus-based education nonprofit organization, awarded six schools and 90 teachers in the district with the Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research.

The award was founded as a partnership between the Ohio Academy of Science, the governor’s office and the Technology Division of the Ohio Developmental Services Agency.

There are several criteria to meet to be considered for the award, including conducting local science fairs; qualifying two of more students for the Ohio Academy of Science’s district science days; having students participate in at least one science opportunity beyond the classroom; and explaining to external STEM professionals how the school’s program meets the Ohio Academy of Science’s definition of STEM education.

Other top performers included Dayton, which had 29 recognized teachers in three schools; Chillicothe, which has 24 teachers in four schools; and Cincinnati, which had 23 teachers in four schools.

Throughout the state, 672 teachers and 61 schools were recognized for activities in the 2017-18 school year.

Akron’s accolades come as the district continues to expand its STEM programming. Its newest school, the I Promise School, recently received a STEM designation. And earlier this month, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced in conjunction with the Cleveland Cavaliers that they were donating $500,000 to the district to expand its STEM offerings.

The awardees in Akron were:
  • 15 educators at Buchtel Community Learning Center
  • 12 educators at Ellet High School
  • Seven educators at Firestone Community Learning Center
  • Eight educators at Miller-South Visual & Performing Arts
  • 20 educators at National Inventors Hall of Fame Middle School
  • 28 educators at National Inventors Hall of Fame High School
