Community

At Akron Public Schools, we proudly partner with many colleges, universities, businesses, community organizations and the greater Akron community to prepare each APS student for success in his or her pathway – from the College and Career Academies of Akron to advanced programs and enriching opportunities, we come together as a community for our students!

Student Stories

The greater Akron community partners with our district to create opportunities that support our students’ interests and propel careers – and APS students return that investment full-stride into our community and the world around us!

So Ma Ya

North High School 2020 Grad

So Ma Ya became the first North High School graduate to be offered a position at Akron Children’s Hospital when she began working as a greeter/screener in 2021. She received tuition reimbursement and juggled her part-time work with her studies at Stark State College. After earning her associate’s degree, she became a medical assistant in Akron Children’s Hospital Allergy & Immunology Department. What’s next? So Ma Ya is looking to pursue a bachelor’s degree with an ultimate career path in pharmacology or hospital administration.

Carlos

Garfield CLC 2023 Grad

Carlos has made tremendous strides in his life on and off the mound. Not only did he assume the role of captain of his baseball team, he kept himself and his teammates constantly motivated. His natural leadership means he knows and communicates to the rest of his men what they need to do and where they need to be. He was also the coach's right-hand man – helping Coach Shaheen however he can. The skills that Carlos has developed during his high school career will no doubt greatly help him when he enlists in the U.S. Army after graduation.

Investing in Our Community

APS is committed to operational transparency and encourages open dialogue with our community so we can understand your needs and priorities in order to best invest in them. As one of the largest employers in Akron, being responsible stewards of our finances impacts the quality of our schools and the education we provide - it also has a huge impact on our community as a whole!

In Ohio, K-12 education is a shared responsibility with schools funded through a combination of state and local resources. This hybrid funding model helps to reduce the financial burden for Akron taxpayers by bridging funding gaps to ensure educational opportunities, programs and resources meet the diverse needs of our students. Akron Public Schools is also receiving $149.3 million in ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funds, which are being spent in three focused areas: scholars, schools and families.

Renting Space in a CLC

Akron Public Schools (APS) and our community share in the use of our more than three dozen community learning centers (CLCs), by virtue of a cooperative agreement between the school district and the City of Akron. Each year, thousands of our friends and neighbors around Akron call upon us to assist them in reserving space for an activity or a meeting in one of our CLCs. Whether in an elementary, middle or high school, APS is pleased to offer our facilities to community groups and individuals for a facility use fee.

The Akron Public Schools Board of Education has developed specific guidelines that govern our facility rental program Building and CLC Rental Procedures.

If you have questions about CLC rentals, please contact Daphne Falasco at dfalasco@apslearns.org or 330.761.2806.
