In preparation for this event, 93 teams across Northeast Ohio will be running their practice 5K, which allows each team to celebrate how far they’ve come during the 10-week season and to demonstrate to all of the program’s participants that they are fully prepared to complete a 5K.

“It’s important for the girls to know that they are capable of completing the 3.1-mile run before the big day so that they can feel confident in their abilities,” explains Robyn Cutler, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio. “For many program participants, the practice 5K is the first time they will tackle a 3.1-mile run, so we want them to celebrate the practice run just as much as they do the season-ending 5K.”

Volunteer coaches across Northeast Ohio understand the significance of this practice run and work hard to make the day special for their teams. This season, four Akron-area sites have decided to come together to make their practice 5K even more memorable for their girls.

On Thursday, May 10, at 3 p.m., Girls on the Run teams from Hyre CLC, Hatton CLC, Windemere CLC and Ritzman CLC will come together for the Ellet Cluster GOTR Practice 5K at Hyre CLC. They’ve also reached out to other groups in the community to help make this event one the girls won’t soon forget. Students of the Ellet culinary program will be preparing and donating boxed meals for all participants to enjoy following the run, and the band will be playing at the finish line to celebrate each girl as she finishes. The Heart & Sole team at Hyre CLC will also be hand delivering informational fliers to the residents who live on the practice route to encourage community involvement.

“One of the many themes covered in the Girls on the Run program is the importance of community,” says Cutler. “To see these teams come together and invite the community to celebrate with them demonstrates their understanding of this very important lesson, and we’re so thankful for our coaches who helped make it possible.”

The Akron community is encouraged to attend the Ellet Cluster Practice 5K on May 10 at Hyre CLC to celebrate these incredible young ladies and all of their accomplishments this season.
