The LeBron James Family Foundation is celebrating its newest class of students who will enter the I Promise School this summer.

The foundation held an orientation Tuesday at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn for the 120 second-graders and their families who were chosen to attend the school next school year through a lottery system.

The I Promise School, which will be part of Akron Public Schools, is for kids at risk of falling behind their peers academically. It was started by James and his foundation, in part, to address the district’s low graduation rates.

On July 30, 240 third- and fourth-graders will start their first day at the school, which will temporarily be at 400 W. Market St.

Families who attended the orientation learned more details about the school, including its extended learning hours, longer school-year schedule and special supports in place. At the end, they were given the chance to sign their commitment to the school for third through eighth grades.

Nicole Hassan, the foundation’s Akron Public Schools liaison, said at last year’s orientation, when few details about the school were known, all but one family signed a commitment right away. The final family faxed its commitment three days later.

Parents and kids were excited to be at the orientation Tuesday, even before they learned the details of the school.

“We won the lottery. I prayed all during it,” said Pamela Woodall, grandmother of eight-year-old Marshawn Woodall.

Pamela Woodall said she and Crystole Woodall, Marshawn’s mother, were hoping to be a part of the school. When they found out he’d been chosen, the three of them were excited, particularly Marshawn.

“We had to calm him down when he came in here,” Pamela Woodall said.
