Image of Buchtel CLC BPA TeamKudos to Buchtel Middle School BPA (Business Professionals of America) scholars who did what their coach call "a fantastic" job representing Akron Public Schools and Buchtel CLC at the State Leadership Conference in Columbus this weekend. That means the team will participate in the national tournament, the BPA National Leadership Conference in Dallas in May.

Their coach is Desiree' Reynolds, instructional specialist at Buchtel.  She told us, "I am just giddy with excitement and pride for our scholars. I could just scream (actually, I did). They went to Columbus and competed very well against other middle school students in Ohio."

Buchtel competed in the categories of Prepared Speech and Keyboard Production with eighth-grade student Gage Shaffer in Prepared Speech and seventh-graders Yi'la Boswell and Dierre Watkins in Keyboard Production. Keyboard Production is when students are provided three non-formatted messages that they have to type out and turn into properly formatted documents they have never seen before the competition. They are judged on how well they prepare, type and format based on the proper style as they produce the documents.

These students are advancing to the BPA National Leadership Conference:
  • Gage Shaffer, Prepared Speech (first-place state winner)
  • Yi'la Boswell, Keyboard Production (first-place state winner)
