Partners Bring Experience to APS Students

UA, UNSBE Virtual STEM Career Day & Pasta Rovers

Image of Virtual STEM Career DayIn a hybrid environment, at their homes or at their school buildings, 33 students from eight middle schools participated last week in a couple of hands-on STEM activities. The career experiences were supplied by two valued Akron Pubic Schools partners.

First, students were welcomed by Gary L. Miller, president of The University of Akron. Then our students began their creative pursuits, engaging in fun and educational instruction while creating their very own, one-of-a-kind pasta rovers and robotic arms. School counselors or school librarians from each building along with University of Akron counselor interns served as on-site facilitators.

NSBE members Dennis Williams and Antonio Crenshaw, under the direction of Dr. Julie Zhao, served as the lead "engineers" for the event. In addition, Dennis and other team members designed, created and delivered the NBSE STEM Career Day kits to Akron Public Schools. The kits included all materials for the event, snacks and University of Akron memorabilia. APS student service teams delivered the kits to students' homes or schools.

At the close of the event, students were addressed by Dr. Dallas Grundy, senior vice president, chief financial officer at UA. Dr. Grundy is a former NSBE member. It was a great learning experience for the students and real-life exposure to the possibilities for their futures.

Special thanks to APS Career Adviser Dreama Whitfield for coordinating this event.
