I write to you to share a more lengthy update regarding the Akron Public Schools Superintendent Search and the next steps of the process. Forgive me for the length of this message; however, I felt it important to share as many details with you as possible as we are moving along. Our goal is to be transparent along the way, and these community updates are one way to do that.

First, we are still accepting applications for the position of superintendent until Sunday, February 28. The board will meet to discuss candidates on March 11. This will allow board members time to thoroughly review each candidate's materials. Up until now, the board has not received or reviewed any candidate information and will receive that Monday, March 1, from our consultant, Steve Horton from the Ohio School Boards Association.

Secondly, thank you to everyone who completed the survey or participated in the focus groups. Your participation has supplied the board with an over 100-page report on your thoughts about our district and the characteristics of our next leader. Thank you. Below is a breakdown of the participants, as I shared in my report at last Monday's meeting:

The survey had an 8.5% response rate (405 out of 4,755 sent). The majority of the surveys were distributed the first week of February. Here is the breakdown per category of participant:
  • Certified (administrators & teachers): 10.7% (283 out of 2,643)
  • Classified (support staff): 3.5% (44 out of 1,270)
  • Community (partners/non-parents): 7.4% (53 out of 716)
  • Administrative Assistants (secretaries): 19.8% (25 out of 126)
There were also six focus groups, where the consultant virtually met with a few members to discuss in more detail our greatest opportunities and desires in a new leader. The breakdown for those are below:
  • Two Community partner groups: 19 participated
  • Union Leaders: 7 participated
  • Student Board Members: all 8 participated
  • Building Principals: 16 participated
  • PTA focus group: 12 participated
The Family/Parent survey opened this week and will close Friday, February 26. As of this morning, we have already received more than 400 responses from families. Thank you so much for your overwhelming response.

Lastly, I would like to share the next steps in the superintendent search process with you. The next steps of the process are as follows:

March 1: The board will meet to discuss the process and format of candidate interviews. Feel free to watch this meeting on the APS YouTube channel on Monday at 5 p.m.

March 11: The board will meet in executive session to discuss candidates and make interview selections. A few days after this meeting, the community can expect an update from me with the list of candidates we are interviewing.

Late March: The board will conduct first-round interviews based upon the format and process decided at the March 1 meeting. Soon thereafter, the community should expect another community update announcing the finalists, dates of their interviews and how you can get involved through the public forums.

Early April: The board will conduct the final-round interviews with the finalist. These interviews will include public forums as decided at the March 1 meeting.

Late April: The board is expected to vote on the selected candidate and announce the next Superintendent.
