Image of STEM EXPO logoAkron Public Schools STEM EXPO is this weekend. Even in a virtual environment, students have submitted 123 projects for judging in the annual science fair. Open to all students, this year's youngest entrant is in third grade.

The Director of Science Curriculum and Instruction, Katrina Halasa, Ph.D., is impressed with the 'turnout' for this first-ever virtual STEM Expo.

"We have nearly 170 students signed up for the expo," she said. "We even have a group of newcomers doing one project together, which is exciting to see. I think we're all looking forward to witnessing the work of some of our best and brightest students this Saturday."

Known for its strong science curriculum and teaching, Akron Public Schools is annually among the best in Ohio when it comes to accolades for science education.

The Thomas Edison Awards for the 2019-20 school year include many APS recipients. The governor’s awards for excellence in research and STEM education -- targeting those who extend education beyond typical classroom activity -- is typically one in which Akron Public Schools excels.

Since 2003, APS has received 114 Thomas Edison awards in 20 schools, and 521 teachers have received this honor at least once.

The Director of Teaching and Learning, Karen Gegick, told the Akron Public Schools Board of Education at last night's meeting (1/25/21), "You may not know, but we have many multiple winners. In fact, 71 of our teachers have won this between five and eight times."
