Akron Public Schools and the Akron Zoo teamed up to provide health and hygiene items for APS students and their families at Backpack Adventure on August 19-20. Students received drawstring bags that included shampoo, reusable masks, soap, socks, hand sanitizer, free Akron Zoo tickets and more. For the first time, parents also received a special family bag of laundry detergent, deodorant, soap and more. More than 2,000 student bags and 1,500 family bags were donated. The event was adapted to a drive-through event due to COVID-19 precautions. The main event at the zoo had families drive through the parking lot where they were greeted by animals and costumed characters, where they picked up the bags at different stops, and where they grabbed snacks courtesy of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Three satellite locations were located at the Metro RTA Transit Center, North High School and Jennings CLC. Backpack Adventure was supported by Dominion Foundation, Giant Eagle, Proctor and Gamble, JoAnn Fabrics, Metro RTA, Akron Community Foundation, Community Response Fund, Metro by T-Mobile, PNC, Summit County Children Services and more.
