Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the newly titled West Akron African American 5K will become a virtual event this year Aug. 1 with a primary focus on the health-related events that typically surround the race.

“Last year, the West Akron 5K joined with the African American Male Wellness Initiative, out of Columbus, Ohio,” said Pastor Kevin Rushing, of the United Baptist Church, who is an event organizer. “The 5K is a 3.1-mile run/walk, but it’s also an event where we highlight and talk about the importance of wellness and health. We highlight issues, which definitely impact African-American males, such as high cholesterol, blood pressure and other things that really impact our community. As much as this event is a race and a walk, it also is very much about bringing attention to those health issues.”

According to Rushing, everyone in the community is invited to take part in the event. Read more here >>.
