The Entrepreneurship/Marketing classes of Buchtel, East, Kenmore/Garfield and North participated in The Spark competition. Students were asked to create a 60-90 second video promoting an idea, product or service of their design. Students displayed their videos before business leaders from the area and explained their inspiration for the idea and then answered questions from the judges. The contest took place at Akron Public Schools administrative building on March 4, 2020.

Proposals included:
  • First Place - Shipping-container community for the homeless
  • Second Place - App to encourage young women who struggle with self-image issues
  • Third Place - Teen after-school alternative club
  • Contact lenses that dissolve while sleeping
  • Electric gloves that warm-up in the car
  • Food truck to provide an alternative to school lunches
  • Electronic object sterilizer
  • Smartphone linked stove/oven camera
  • Akron wifi service for underprivileged students
  • App that pulls together community services for the unemployed/under-employed
The winning team video is linked here: El Piso Homeless Community.

This contest was part of a grant from Burton-Morgan encouraging entrepreneurial projects by students.

More than 50 students completed projects at their respective schools and were evaluated by business partners at the schools. The top 10 projects were brought in for the event.
