Image of Middle School Basketball ChampionshipsAPS concluded the middle school basketball season with an outstanding championship night hosted by Hyre CLC on January 30. A crowd of nearly 600 attended this outstanding championship event. The boys' and girls' teams were from Buchtel CLC and Litchfield CLC.

In the girls' game, regular-season champions Litchfield entered with a 9-1 record. The upstart Buchtel Lady Griffs came into the game at 8-2 including a late-season victory over the Argos. Buchtel got off to an early lead and never looked back! Leading at halftime by a score of 19-12, Coach Beecher and the Lady Griffs scored in double figures in the third and fourth periods to ice the game away. Buchtel showed great balance in the scoring column with Ameena Vincent (18), Aavi Tullis-Johnson (9) and Alissa Littlejohn (7). Litchfield was led by Aalivia Mullins with 16 hard working points. Mullins, despite being saddled with four fouls, helped keep coach Jeff Whited and Litchfield in the battle until fouling out early in the fourth period on a charging foul. Kiara Smith chipped in with 8 points for the Argos. The final score was Buchtel 41,  Litchfield 24

Buchtel entered the boys' championship game undefeated with a fine record of 10-0. Litchfield with a 7-3 record lost twice to the Argos during the regular season. Litchfield showed great poise and teamwork to gain a hard-fought and exciting win by a score of 45-41. The Argos had eight players enter the scoring column led by Diare Pride with 11 points; Sir Charles Gordon (8); and Dillon Shadie, Marquet Brooks and Jonathan White, all with 6 points. Litchfield trailed Buchtel 21-17 at the half. The Griffs took the halftime lead behind two outstanding eighth-graders in Lavelle Sharpe and Gione Smith. Sharpe led the scoring at 16 points with Gione Smith chipping in 7 points and several key rebounds. Litchfield took control during the third period by hitting for 17 big points to forge ahead heading to the final period. Litchfield coach Eric Mitchell had the Argos ready for the Buchtel pressure in the fourth period. Buchtel coach Nate Kilker used several wise timeouts to cut the deficit but could not get over the hump in the final minutes. It was a great night for all at Hyre!
