A rescue mission in Canton serves free Starbucks.

Two Akron women bring their love of volunteering and long-time friendship to a program of the coffeehouse chain that aims to battle hunger and food waste.

The women donate their time — up to about six hours twice a week — picking up unsold food, including breakfast sandwiches, wraps and pastries, at 21 Starbucks in Summit, Portage, Stark and Medina counties.

It’s a late-night volunteer shift, running from about 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. because the pickups are generally made after the stores have closed.

After the last pickup, the women take the food to the Refuge of Hope in Canton, where it becomes part of a meal at the mission’s men’s shelter or the hot-food program open to the public. Read more here >>.
