The United Way of Summit County celebrated the opening of its first Family Resource Center at Robinson Community Learning Center (CLC) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

Located inside the school, the Family Resource Center is designed to help families overcome nonacademic barriers to success by connecting them with health and social services, academic enrichment, and more. The center is open to all community residents and is staffed by a full-time resource coordinator who will meet with residents to discuss their needs and provide information and referrals to appropriate resources.

Additional United Way services available to residents at the center include free one-on-one financial coaching and free tax preparation services.

The ribbon-cutting event included remarks by Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James, Akron Deputy Mayor Annie McFadden, and United Way of Summit County President and CEO Jim Mullen. Julie Ann Sweet-Buntin spoke on behalf of KeyBank, which donated $250,000 to establish the resource center.

“We are grateful to all of our partners, KeyBank, Akron Public Schools, and the city of Akron, for making this possible,” said United Way of Summit County President and CEO Jim Mullen in a release. “One of the most effective things we can do is to work with families individually. When we work to meet their needs, whatever they are, we can build transformational change on a large scale – in our schools and in our community as a whole.”

The United Way established the resource center to help advance its “Bold Goals by 2025” campaign, which seeks to improve third-grade reading scores, raise high school graduation and college/career readiness rates, financially empower thousands of working families and reduce emergency room visits due to overdoses.
