21st Annual Volunteer Banquet - March 26, 2013

Filters: APS PROUD , Bettes Elementary , King Elementary , Lawndale Elementary , Glover CLC ...

Akron Public Schools recognizes the important role community and parent volunteers play in its students' education. Indeed, it takes many hands to shape a child, and the effect is nowhere as apparent as in the results of the wonderful programs represented this evening. The 14 winners being honored, along with the 28 other nominees, bring to our schools a wealth of knowledge, service and compassion. The Volunteer Recognition Awards, sponsored by the Akron Board of Education and the Business Advisory Council, recognize those who have gone above and beyond in their involvement and contributions. Candidates are nominated by Akron Public Schools personnel in the categories of business, civic organization, individual, PTA and senior citizen. Each person who volunteers his/her time, talent or resources enhances the lives and educations of others. It is no small compliment to be labeled a "volunteer." Without them, the quality of education would diminish.

Kristen Hess was recently highlighted in the national newsletter for the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations. Hess, a senior at KHS, was selected by members of the Teacher Aspirations team to write an essay last spring for the Student Voice section of the Aspirations newsletter. With the help of Keidi Boatfield and Dan Freeman, both of whom provided editing suggestions and content ideas for Kristen, her essay accurately reflected the impact Aspirations is making at Kenmore High School. On September 11, 2012, Kristen was surprised with a framed copy of the essay during a staff meeting at KHS. She was told her article was published and would be seen nationwide.
