Board approves elimination of seven administrative positions

Jul 26, 2010

At its July 26 meeting, the Akron Board of Education approved the elimination of seven administrative positions.

Positions eliminated include:

  • Executive Director, Communications
  • Executive Director, Student Support Services
  • Administrative Coach
  • 2 Assistant Principals
  • Special Education Coordinator
  • School Improvement Coordinator

The new structure results in a total wage reduction of $674,253.

“Obviously, it’s not easy making staff reductions,” said Superintendent David W. James. “That being said, it is our responsibility to taxpayers to balance our budget.”

This is the fourth wave of budget cuts for Akron Public Schools since early 2009. Previous reductions include the closing of five school buildings in February 2009, the elimination of 17 administrative positions in March 2009 and 82 personnel cuts in May 2009.

"I support and applaud Superintendent James for actively taking steps to bring recommendations to the Board on how we can right-size our organization," said Rev. Dr. Curtis T. Walker, Sr., board president. "We will continue to work in partnership to reduce our budget deficit and implement the district-wide strategic plan."
