APS faculty, board members and students from all over the district competed in the 7th Annual Cardboard Canoe Competition on Tuesday, March 26. The cardboard canoes competition is the brainchild of Dan Spak, Firestone High School engineering teacher, and is part of the APS Career Education department. The competition, now in it's seventh year, combines all the STEM principles into a single challenge. For the students, it is a wonderful opportunity for them to put their classroom learning into practice. For the adults, it is a chance to have fun and pit their own skills against their kids' skills.

This video, "Isotropy in the ISS," was created by finalists at Firestone High School (top 10 in their age group for the AMERICAS). It was entered in an online competition to the YouTube Space Lab sponsored by Lenovo in cooperation with NASA, The European Space Agency, The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Space Adventures. The ISS claims "small particles and liquids will float away in all directions on the ISS because gravity is so reduced—there is no up or down," implying an isotropic system. These students put their statement to the test.
