Firestone student Sara Hardman was named a 2009 Academic All-Star in the Akron Beacon Journal's Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year competition. The following Firestone students were awarded honorable mention: Katherine Alkire, Elizabeth Aronhalt, Alysse Bryson, Jordan Reilly, Andrew Scott and Jessica White.
Firestone senior Christine Coffman is the #1 seed in the Northeast tennis sectional for the second year in a row. She qualified for the state tennis tournament by capturing the #3 seed in the Oberlin District Tournament. Her coach is Craig Sampsell.

Buchtel became the first APS school in 30 years to win an Associated Press state poll championship in boys basketball, thanks to its 75-66 victory over Dayton Dunbar. Central-Hower was the last APS school to win the Division I crown in 1980.

Thirty STEM School students competed in the 46th annual Age Group Track Program held at Firestone, and 27 placed in their events. Students from 30 elementary and three middle schools participated in six events (two field and four running). Results are posted at www.akron.k12.oh.us/dept/050. The STEM school students' coach is Aaron Merz.
North students in rooms 110, 118, 126, 218 and 420 earned a trophy for their bowling performance at the Riviera Lanes tournament. The trophy is on display in the school's main office.
The following students were named WAKR's Student Athlete of the Week: Buchtel – Johnathan Coleman (football) and Jason Pitts (basketball); East – Jalisa Gavin (basketball) and Gerald Gregory (football); Ellet – Jeffrey Cockerham (golf) and Cara DeAngelis (cross-country); Firestone – Samantha Cardarelli (volleyball); Garfield – Sheldon Spaulding (basketball); and North – Jesse Unk (track).
Akron Digital Academy freshman Jackson Harris won two gold medals in speed skating at the Special Olympics. He also lettered in bowling and baseball this year.
