Now that the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) has officially closed, more than 200 Akron children could be looking for new schools.

About 12,000 Ohio children were enrolled in the online charter school, which lost funding from the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West after the school announced it couldn't meet its financial obligations for the year.

That's because the school was ordered to pay the state $2.5 million toward $80 million the Ohio Department of Education reported was improperly paid to ECOT based on student counts.

ECOT appealed the closure and, on its website, announced that oral arguments will be heard Feb. 13 at the Ohio Supreme Court. A ruling is expected by summer. ECOT wrote it "is still confident in the merits of our case in the Supreme Court."

Families wishing to enroll their children in Akron Public Schools may attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 4-6 p.m. at Innes Community Learning Center, 1999 East Ave. in Akron.
